My mistakes as a social media manager were truly varied and, at times, quite ridiculous. Perhaps the most damaging was when I employed scam bots to buy followers. This method, though tempting for quick results, is both unethical and potentially harmful. Never, and I mean never, should you resort to such practices for your clients' pages.
Mistake 1: Focusing on Quantity Over Quality
Early in my career, I placed too much importance on the number of followers, friends, and shares rather than the quality of engagement. I was eager to attract everyone to my page without understanding the importance of a targeted, interested audience. Additionally, I lacked in posting valuable content, which is a cardinal sin in social media marketing. Valuable content drives engagement and builds trust with your audience.
Mistake 2: Begging for Attention
Instead of providing engaging content, I often resorted to begging for likes, shares, and followers from friends and family. This approach is not only ineffective but also comes across as desperate. It's far more effective to create content that naturally piques interest and invites engagement.
Mistake 3: Overusing Hashtags and Fake IDs
Another blunder was the overuse of hashtags. While appropriate hashtags can enhance post discoverability, excessive use can be seen as spammy and may bore your audience. It's crucial to use hashtags relevantly and purposefully. Alongside this, I used fake IDs to market my clients' pages, a practice not only misleading but also potentially illegal. Avoid resorting to smoke-screen tactics; they can tarnish your reputation and be legally problematic.
