Advocacy in Action: A Male Ally’s Journey for Social Justice

As a male ally, I fight for women's rights and pro-choice. I participate in pride parades, march for First Nations people in Canada, and create YouTube videos on social justice. These actions have been a part of my identity for over five years, motivated by a deep sense of responsibility towards my community.

Fighting for Equality

When the band fired my ex because he came out as gay at his job, I took matters into my own hands. I secured a lawyer and approached the human rights commission. In Alberta, we believe we were the first same-sex couple to successfully challenge a band's chief based on LGBTQ discrimination, ultimately winning the case.

Social Justice for Vulnerable Groups

My advocacy extends to marginalized communities beyond LGBTQ individuals. I've marched for two-spirited people, tackled the issue of predatory sex offenders in our local park, and engaged with local government to clean up our parks and address issues like prostitution.

I've also played a pivotal role in organizing the first Alberta two-spirited retreat, which saw extensive international attendance. My goal is to support the government in addressing the homeless epidemic, ensuring that everyone has a place to call home.

Passionate Mobilization

My actions are driven by a genuine concern for the well-being of my fellow Canadians, particularly those who need support. I believe in mobilizing resources and raising awareness, but never at the cost of others' well-being. I care deeply about the wellness of both men and women, and I believe everyone deserves a voice.

Critique of Misguided Activists

It's important to differentiate between genuine activists and those who seek to cause trouble. People who engage in rioting, looting, or violence are misguided and may be driven by desperation, ignorance, or a desire for attention. In contrast, movements like Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Take Back the Night are genuine efforts aimed at creating a better society for everyone.

These activists are not looking for personal gain but are instead working to improve the lives of marginalized individuals within society. Their actions, while sometimes controversial, contribute positively to the fabric of our communities.

Altruism vs. Narcissism

While some individuals may enter the political space to gain power and manipulate others, most activists start with the intention to make a positive impact. This is known as altruism – the selfless desire to improve the lives of others.

There may be individuals among activist groups who seek to create chaos or cause trouble, and we understand that. However, for the majority, the goal is to address societal issues and make the world a better place for everyone, regardless of their backgrounds or identities.

My journey has been one of self-discovery and empathy. I believe that everyone, regardless of gender or background, has a role to play in driving positive change. Let's continue to support and encourage those who work tirelessly to make our world a more equitable place.

Together, we can make a difference. Let's stand not just for ourselves, but for everyone.
