I have had the privilege of managing teams for six years, and I have seen firsthand that effective leadership involves a combination of mentorship, teamwork, and exemplary conduct. Many leaders start treating their team members as subordinates, but the best approach is to view them as students. A true mentor will encourage and support each team member, fostering an environment where ideas and contributions thrive. Just as a skilled mentor guides their student, leading a smart, capable team member can elevate the entire group. Moreover, recognizing high-potential team members and promoting their growth can create a symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits.

Prioritize the Team During Success and Failure

The dynamics of leadership are highlighted during both triumph and adversity. Like MS Dhoni, who is known for giving the trophy to the youngest team member, demonstrating that you value the team’s collective effort, not just individual success. Similarly, when a failure occurs, take the full responsibility. This approach not only builds trust and reliability but also garners the team’s unwavering respect and loyalty.

Emphasize Small Successes

Ashley Carnegie, a renowned speaker, once said, 'Building something is easy. It's sustaining something that is working that's the hard work.' Recognize and celebrate even the smallest achievements. Acknowledging the efforts of your team members for their contributions will not only boost morale but also motivate them to continue delivering high-quality work. It is crucial to make team members feel valued, engaged, and appreciated.

Be an Example

Setting the right expectations and ensuring that the team follows them is vital. If you want your team to be punctual and transparent, you must also be punctual and transparent. Some key practices include:

Updating the entire team via email after gathering status updates from all stakeholders. Preparing for meetings and sharing the agenda and expected outcomes in advance. Offering timely and effective solutions to any problems that arise.
