My Liberal Views and the Need for Healthcare and Supportive Policies

My Liberal Views and the Need for Healthcare and Supportive Policies

When reflecting on my political stance, one of the most liberal views I hold is about abortion. A slogan I once encountered on a protest sign resonated with me deeply:

Abortion on demand NOW

This viewpoint is rooted in the principle that women should have complete autonomy over their own bodies and health decisions. Pregnancy, whether continued or terminated, is a significant personal and health-related choice. Medical science has significantly increased the safety of pregnancy, yet it remains a risky period. Abortions are sometimes necessary to prevent complications and save the mother's life, making the ability to terminate a pregnancy a critical determinant of personal freedom.

The Urgency of Universal Healthcare

Another key aspect of my liberal stance is the call for universal healthcare. According to Politifact, this claim has been rated true. Despite advances in medical technology, approximately 45,000 Americans die each year due to lack of health insurance coverage. This is a catastrophic statistic, and the failures of the current system cannot be understated.

Given the situation, my Republican friends have not adequately addressed this issue. Their proposed solutions have often been insufficient, and the current approach falls short of what is needed. Without a robust and accessible healthcare system, many Americans continue to face dire health consequences.

Challenging Classical Liberalism

My American conservatism often aligns with classical liberalism, but I believe that in certain contexts, true liberalism requires a more comprehensive approach. Specifically, capitalism should not be seen as the sole solution for all individuals, especially those who are unqualified or incapable of obtaining productive work.

In a society where the free market can do a lot to improve living standards, it is essential to recognize that it cannot directly assist everyone. The phrase "Get a job pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" is great advice for most people, but it is simply not applicable to those who are too young, too old, too physically or mentally handicapped to find any employment. Therefore, the government must play a crucial role in supporting these individuals.

I still support stringent standards and effective enforcement to prevent fraud, and I believe that the most local solutions are often the best. However, I also recognize that there is a critical need for more resources to support those in society who are struggling. This includes fostering a sense of community through families, churches, NGOs, and local governments.

Taxation and Spend: A Liberal Solution

While I believe in big government as a last resort, I am willing to support increased taxation and spending in cases where it can genuinely meet the needs of individuals who have exhausted all other options. Programs such as foster care, social security, disability benefits, nursing homes, and homeless shelters are essential and should be funded adequately. These services can be more efficient than private solutions or are necessary because private solutions cannot scale up to meet the existing need.

My most liberal viewpoint is that with many caveats, we should tax and spend more to help this particular deserving subset of the poor. Proposals for increased government spending must be balanced with the need to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these programs. Ultimately, providing support to those who are unable to provide for themselves is a fundamental aspect of a liberal society.
