It's natural to encounter positions that require qualifications you may not fully possess. In such cases, it’s okay to apply for a job if you are genuinely interested and willing to learn. Highlighting your transferable skills, eagerness to grow, and explaining how you would add value despite the gaps can make a significant difference. Many employers value passion and potential, making it a worthwhile endeavor to pursue such opportunities.

The Current Landscape

Historically, job advertisements might include the phrase ‘help wanted—will train’, signifying a more flexible approach to qualifications. However, this is becoming less common, and today’s job market requires a defined skill set, education, and often specific certifications. For instance, becoming a Hemodialysis Technician like my wife, who is skilled in the field, would not be as simple as acquiring relevant knowledge by living with me and learning informally. Similarly, transitioning into Information Technology would be challenging without proper training and experience.

The path to securing the ‘brass-ring’ job can be slow and requires dedication. For example, starting with hardware refreshes in IT provided me with valuable experience and opened the door to more advanced roles. Experienced technicians often help new individuals, but the learning curve can be steep. Over a decade, I have gained significant experience and feel well-prepared for more advanced positions.
