Reflections on 'OK Boomer': A Generation Gap or a Call for Respect?

As someone born in 1962, it is not a stretch to say I am not a fan of the term ldquo;OK boomerrdquo;. It seems to be shorthand for a complete dismissal of all that a particular generation worked to achieve in society. Every time I hear it from a younger generation, I have a response rooted in respect for the achievements of my peers and their contributions to society.

Achievements Beyond Moon Landings

Far from being a mere reference to the moon landings, the sentiments behind ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; discount the groundbreaking work of scientists like David and Bill, the pioneers of the mRNA process used in the development of COVID-19 vaccines. These achievements, alongside many others, highlight the valuable contributions of the preceding generation. It is cheap to dismiss these accomplishments in favor of a flippant slogan.

The Root Cause of Conflict

According to my personal experience, ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; is born out of a desire to be heard and respected. A prime example is my relationship with my father, a boomer himself, whom I enjoyed engaging with on political topics. However, our conversations were often one-sided. My father would dominate the discourse, dismissing any differing viewpoints without consideration. Such dialogue is not a true conversation but a monologue, driven by the belief that respect and value lie solely within onersquo;s own opinions.

Unheard and Disrespected

Younger generations, feeling unheard and unappreciated, have taken to using ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; as a form of self-protection. When they attempt to have meaningful discussions or advocate for global concerns, they are met with derision, name-calling, and an unwillingness to listen. Children who step up to speak in front of global governing bodies are ridiculed for their efforts.

Parents and grandparents often place the entire blame on the younger generation, calling them spoiled and everything wrong with the world. The constant criticism can be demoralizing. After countless times of being told that the younger generation is ldquo;ruiningrdquo; everything, faced with the disdainful label of ldquo;snowflakerdquo;, and having access to technology that older adults claim could enjoy if not for their stubbornness, younger individuals are left with nothing to say.

The Importance of Conversation

It is important to note that not all boomers exhibit the behaviors that ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; reflects. This meme is often directed at an individual who consistently displays the aforementioned behaviors. It is a call for all generations to engage in respectful dialogue rather than dismiss or ridicule one another.

Ultimately, ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; is a reflection of a generation gap that can be bridged through mutual respect, understanding, and open communication. It is not a blanket indictment of an age group but a recognition of the need for more respectful and constructive dialogue. It is never too late for adults to sit down, listen, and understand the perspectives of the younger generation.

Disclaimer: This is not directed at ldquo;all boomersrdquo;. ldquo;OK boomerrdquo; is often a result of specific behaviors exhibited by individuals and is not a legitimate reflection of an entire generation.

Do consider having a conversation with someone you donrsquo;t fully understand. Respect, understanding, and dialogue can lead to positive change.
