My opinion is that while the Interviewing Officer and the Group Testing Officer are capable of distinguishing 'coached' candidates from those appearing without any aid, the percentage of selected candidates without coaching is significant.

About 40% of the candidates who get selected finally have no formal coaching and appear for the test for the first time. Another 30% consist of individuals who made it through in subsequent appearances, still uncoached. This suggests that while coaching can be advantageous, it is not an absolute requirement to succeed in the SSB.

Is Coaching Necessary for Beginners?

For those who have not received any prior guidance, such as first-time applicants, I recommend going for one round of coaching to gain an overview and better understanding of the syllabus. Self-study and confidence can often be enough once the foundational knowledge is acquired. However, beginners might find it useful to have some guidance initially.
