The Disappearance of Manners and Etiquette in Modern Society
Introduction
Modern society often seems more focused on convenience and technology than on the essential values of manners and etiquette. However, in my household, these values have been deeply ingrained from the start. Basic courtesies such as offering a seat to an older person, opening doors, removing one's hat at the dinner table, and using polite language like 'please' and 'thank you' are not just useful, but are essential for a pleasant and respectful interaction with others.
Why Manners Matter
The disappearance of manners and etiquette seems to be a widespread concern. Yet, I have received no clear or concise answers to the reasons behind this apparent decline. It is crucial to explore why people have become less aware of these social graces. In my view, being pleasant and respectful in one's interactions can only enhance the quality of personal and professional relationships.
Flexibility and Courtesy
Using manners is not just about adhering to strict rules; it is also about being adaptable. Being able to 'manner up' or 'manner down' according to the situation can prevent unnecessary rudeness or aloofness. For example, thanking parents and teachers for teaching basic etiquette, standing up for women and the elderly, and courteously waiting in a queue without rudely snatching things and not saying thank you. These simple acts can contribute to making the world a more courteous and pleasant place.
Technological Impact
One interesting point is that manners may appear to have disappeared due to the rapid advancement of technology. The etiquette guiding the polite use of technology often lags behind the technology itself. This mismatch can make it seem as though manners have vanished. However, just as with other declining skills such as reading, learning social responsibility, and kindness, we need to revive the teaching of manners again.
Examples of Manners
Manners like saying 'please' and 'thank you' will always be relevant. Other manners, such as not chewing with your mouth open, will always be considered unacceptable. As for elbows on the table, this practice is quite outdated, though it may still be seen in some cultures.
Teaching Manners
Many people, particularly those who have not been taught manners, fail to pass them on to their children. This cycle of unteaching manners can lead to a gap in social etiquette. It is hoped that as society evolves and becomes more harmonious, these values will be reintroduced and widely taught.
Conclusion
The disappearance of manners and etiquette in modern society is a matter of concern. However, with a focus on teaching these essential social skills and adapting them to the changing times, we can ensure that these values remain relevant and valued. By fostering good manners, we contribute to a more courteous and respectful world for everyone.
