The Impact of Leaving Social Media: How Much Would You Be Missed?

Last May, I decided to deactivate my Facebook account. Although I considered deleting it entirely, I opted to keep Messenger as a preferred means of communication with a few close friends. This decision turned out to be one of the best moves I have made in many years. It was refreshing to exit that toxic environment and the general addiction that social media can create. Every aspect of my life has improved.

When I unplugged, I had around 2,000 "friends". Since then, only about a dozen have reached out to say hello or inquire about my well-being. In fact, many of these people were those who sent irrelevant and irritating conspiracy theory posts. So, generally speaking, we are not missed on social media except by those near and dear to us in real life.

I have remained on Quora because it provides interesting reading. Most users aim to remain factual and the platform focuses more on content than personality. It is not a place for angry debates; it is a forum for sharing valuable information. Additionally, I can contribute something positive and informative to the world without it being about "me".

Is Leaving Social Media Worth It?

Whether you would miss social media depends on your perspective. You might miss a substantial amount of news, memes, and trends. However, for some, that might not be a significant loss. If you have other reliable sources of news, memes aren't essential as they will always be available. Most trends are also not that relevant.

It is possible that you have a reason for wanting to close all your social media accounts. If you are taking a temporary break, it's assumed that you are simply taking a digital break. However, if you plan to do this permanently, it would be intriguing to find out the reason behind it. If you don't use social media for a year or more, it's undeniable that you will miss a lot. Sure, friends and family might show you something occasionally, but that wouldn't be enough to replace the experience of having access yourself.

Consider that social media is a powerful tool. It depends on how you use it. If you follow people and join communities that share content related to your interests, whether it be art, business, or fitness, you will surely learn something new or find something interesting or entertaining.

So, will you miss a lot if you close all your social media accounts? You will if you do it for a long period, but if it's just for a few weeks, then no.
