Unresolved Issues with Quora: A User's Perspective
As a long-standing user of Quora, I am disheartened by the ongoing unresolved issues that continue to plague the platform. This article delves into several aspects of Quora that frustrate many users, including moderation controversies, the erosion of features that served to enhance user experience, and the impact of fake names and trolls.
Quora Moderation Controversies
The most significant issue I face with Quora is the inconsistency in its moderation practices. When users make minor slips or use what some might consider slightly offensive language, such as 'shut up,' comments are often collapsed or deleted. Simultaneously, the platform fails to take any action against far more serious issues, such as sexual grooming, pedophilic content, and the sharing of explicit material. This disparity is reprehensible, and it undermines the trust that users place in the platform to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
Erosion of User-Friendly Features
Another area of concern is the loss of user-friendly features that were once integral to the platform. For instance, the feature known as 'Top Writers' provided a platform for users to showcase their contributions and compete for recognition. This feature, which offered users valuable insights and allowed them to brag about their achievements, has been removed. Similarly, the 'Suggest Edits' feature, which was crucial for maintaining the quality of content by catching grammatical errors, has now been replaced by comments from users like Sarah Madden, who alert others to their mistakes. While helpful in some cases, this workaround is inconvenient and less efficient than a built-in editing feature.
The Rise of Reddit Immigrants and Trolls
A notable part of my frustration stems from the influx of users from Reddit who bring with them a less sophisticated user base, replete with fake usernames and trolls. Many of these users, whose names are as cringe-worthy as 'Home Wrecker' or 'Sunflower Iliad,' do not fit well with the more mature and professional atmosphere of Quora. The use of fake names and the proliferation of trolls have significantly detracted from the value of the platform, making it less appealing to serious users and diminishing its credibility.
Additional Frustrations
My dissatisfaction is not confined to these main issues. I also hate: The merging of questions, which can lead to fragmented and less organized content. The lack of action against hateful trolls and bullies who persist even after being reported. The unreasonable collapse of answers and comments, often without a clear rationale. The non-immediate functionality of the delete account feature. The occasional slowdown in internet speeds, which impacts the user experience. The inability to completely block users, leaving them visible and active on the platform.
Conclusion
Quora, once a valuable resource for knowledge and discussion, has evolved into a platform plagued by issues that detract from its core purpose. From inconsistent moderation to the erosion of user-friendly features and the influx of trolls, the platform faces numerous challenges that need to be addressed to restore its integrity and appeal. Until these issues are resolved, many users, including myself, will continue to experience frustration and disappointment with the platform.
