Criteria for BTS Fanfiction: What Makes a Great Read?
BTS fanfiction is a popular form of fiction where characters from the popular K-pop group BTS are the main protagonists. However, not all fanfics live up to the expectations of avid readers. As a seasoned fan, I have set certain criteria that a fanfiction must meet before it even makes it to my reading list. Read on to find out the standards I apply, and why they matter.
What Makes a Good BTS Fanfiction?
No Y/N Pairings
First and foremost, no (Y/N) pairings. This is a personal boundary I have, and there is no room for flexibility here. Despite how compelling a story may be, I simply cannot stomach reading fanfiction that pairs the original YN duo. The cliche plot of a girl with so many problems, being bullied, and suddenly being saved by a BTS member is cringe. Reading such stories is an exercise in imagination that I do not partake in.
Proper Grammar and Vocabulary
A well-written story requires excellent grammar and a rich vocabulary. Sentence formation, dialogue, and scene settings must be coherent and well-structured. An English nerd, I spot grammar errors easily. If a book is riddled with spelling errors, it can never make its way into my hands. Proper grammar is a must if the story hopes to capture my interest.
Logical Storyplot
A believable storyline is essential. The plot must make sense and have a solid background. Random scenes and dialogues thrown in haphazardly do not constitute a coherent plot. I want to be able to follow the story and understand the characters' motivations and actions. Characters should face genuine and relatable problems, not just the usual tropes like school crushes or love interests.
Angst and Fluff
Audiences will gravitate towards stories that deliver both emotional depth and light-hearted moments. Angst is appreciated, as it allows readers to empathize with the characters' struggles. Additionally, fluff scenes, such as cute moments like accidental hand brushes, shyness, first kisses, and cuddling, add warmth to the narrative. A well-balanced mix of these elements is what keeps readers engaged and invested in the story.
No Mafia and No Smut
While passionate moments can add depth to a story, excessive smut and mafia themes are off-limits. Overly sexualized content is cringeworthy and uncomfortable to read. Even if a story includes kisses and intimate scenes, they should be kept to a minimum and carefully curated to ensure they serve the narrative.
Proper Usage of Honorifics
For non-Korean writers, avoiding the use of Korean honorifics is crucial. While these may be common in Korean literature, their usage can be jarring and off-putting for international readers. A simple address like 'Oppa' or 'Brother' is universally understood and does not detract from the story's authenticity.
Excerpts and Practical Examples
Here is an example of a poorly written excerpt:
Hoseok oppa!!” I called out. He turned around to look at me and his aura shone like the morning sun. He smiled at me and I ran faster to him and he engulfed me in a huge comfy hug.
And a revised version:
“Annyeonghaseyo oppa,” I happily chirped. He gave me one of his signature smiles. “I’m doing very well now that you are here,” he said. He handed me a rose, its petals red as blood.
The revised version is more natural and less cringe. It captures the essence of the moment without being overly contrived or forced.
By adhering to these criteria, fanfiction authors can create stories that resonate with their audience and stand out from the crowd. Happy reading!
