Smart farming techniques, which include the use of precision irrigation, hydroponics, and vertical farming, can significantly enhance the yield and efficiency of water usage. For example, high-yield agriculture in the Netherlands not only supports the livelihoods of many but also allows for water consumption to drop by as much as 90 percent. This productivity boost means improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers and a reduced carbon and hydrological footprint.

Opportunities for Social Entrepreneurs

Considering this environmental imperative and the human need, now is the perfect time to launch a successful social enterprise in this sector. By focusing on the creation of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices, entrepreneurs can not only transform the livelihoods of smallholder farmers but also contribute to global food security. Moreover, by making farming more attractive and modern, we can inspire the next generation of young farmers to embrace and develop this field.
