The Benefits of Sobriety: A Lifesaving Journey from Alcohol
The Benefits of Sobriety: A Lifesaving Journey from Alcohol
In 1989-1990, I was a heavy drinker. I drove drunk, was nasty, crude, and obnoxious. The reasons were complex, but ultimately it was a choice I made during a tumultuous divorce. However, with the help of God and a newfound resolve, I managed to put that reckless behavior behind me. The transition to sobriety brought about a profound transformation in my life.
No more drinking and driving means no longer endangering the lives of others, no fear of legal trouble like a DWI or losing my driving privileges. My health and self-respect benefited from this radical change, and most importantly, I regained the respect of my family members.
Growth Through Sobriety
Sobriety fosters personal growth, offering numerous benefits. Physically, avoiding alcohol reduces the risk of health complications and hangovers. Emotionally, sobriety lifts the burden of depression often accompanied by alcoholism. Socially, sobriety helps in rebuilding relationships, including with family and significant others.
For me, now 62 years old, sobriety has translated into immense time and financial savings. No more wasted time from hangovers or lost productivity due to health issues. My marriage is a joyous partnership, with a supportive spouse who understands my journey. With sobriety, my life took a turn for the better and I am not facing the daily struggle of wanting to end it.
Chronic Progressive Condition
Alcoholism is a chronic and progressive condition that can lead to death or insanity without treatment. My experience aligns with this reality. Each drink was a step towards a slow, inevitable end. Sobriety is the antidote to this relentless cycle. Today, I celebrate 31 years of sobriety and enjoy a rational, sane mind with a sense of joy. My outlook on life has shifted dramatically, and I never again contemplate suicide.
Alcoholism is a disease. I no longer have to rely on toxic substances to feel good, nor do I risk my life by self-medicating. Through Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), I learned to live a sober life, one filled with love and purpose. Sobriety has given me a chance to live a life free from the chains of alcohol and a chance to experience the full spectrum of life.
To Sum Up the Benefits
The benefits of sobriety are too numerous to catalog. First and foremost, sobriety provides a sense of self-esteem that cannot be achieved through intoxication. Second, it lifts the dark cloud of depression that often accompanies alcoholism. Finally, with self-respect and an optimistic outlook, all other positive aspects of life fall into place.
Life after alcohol is a life worth living. With the support of recovery programs and a strong sense of purpose, sobriety brings about profound personal growth and a new lease on life. “Once I was lost, but now I'm found. Once I was blind, but now I see.”
