Thoroughbreds are renowned for their grace and elegance, but rarely do we encounter truly towering exceptions. Known for their exceptional speed and agility, these horses captivate both racing enthusiasts and spectators alike. However, there are some rare examples that challenge the norm, standing out not just in agility but also in sheer size. Two such giants, Big Jake and Holy Roller, showcase the possible extremes within the Thoroughbred breed.

Big Jake: The Exceptional Outlier

The largest Thoroughbred on record is a horse named Big Jake, who stood at an impressive 17 hands 2.75 inches, which is equivalent to 18.2 hands or 74 inches (188 cm). Recognized by Guinness World Records, Big Jake’s towering height makes him an outlier among thoroughbreds. Typical thoroughbreds range from about 15.2 to 17.2 hands in height. His size is more reminiscent of a standby for draft horses rather than the standard breed.

Strange as it may seem, Big Jake was not always the stately and majestic stallion he is today. In a twist of fate, Big Jake was donated to a new owner looking for a large horse for dressage and other eventing activities. Even more notably, he served as a babysitter for young horses, showcasing his gentle yet powerful presence.

The Other Giant: Holy Roller

While Big Jake is officially recognized as the largest Thoroughbred, it’s often said that Holy Roller AUS is the tallest. Standing at a remarkable 18.1 hands tall, Holy Roller’s stature is a testament to the breed's manageable yet notable size differences. A manual measurement of a Thoroughbred’s height is taken from the ground to the highest point of the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades), which is typically a hand, with each hand being four inches.

For reference, a Thoroughbred of 17 hands is generally considered to be very tall, underscoring the exceptional nature of Holy Roller. It's noteworthy that maintaining the health and soundness of such towering Thoroughbreds is significantly more challenging. Nonetheless, the breed offers a rare glimpse into the potential for vast size variation, with the best-known tall Thoroughbred, Forego, being 17 hands high and incredibly imposing. Forego, a three-time Horse of the Year, also battled arthritis and knee problems, underscoring the physical challenges faced by such large equines.
