When It Is Okay to Embrace Non-Conformity
Non-conformity is sometimes praised and other times condemned. This article explores when it is acceptable and even advisable to be a non-conformist. Non-conformity can enrich society and empower individuality, especially when it aligns with personal beliefs and values.
Who Do You Want to Be?
Do you want to be someone else? To fully immerse yourself in another’s teachings, path, or human and completely separate yourself from your own journey? The answer is clear: you must remember who you are! Embrace your true self, because in the end, you can only be true to yourself. Being yourself is inherently non-conformist. Embrace your individuality and take “Happy Travels” on your unique path!
When Refusal of Compliance is Advised
There are instances when it is not only acceptable but advisable to refuse to conform. Blind conformity without judgment can lead to dire consequences, as evidenced by historical events such as 1930’s Germany and the present-day USA. The saying ‘plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose’ reminds us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. When what is required goes against your belief system, do not conform.
When It Is Permissible to Think Differently
Consider the case of a Baha’i follower of Baha’u’llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i Faith. When something contravenes the beliefs and teachings of Baha’u’llah, one cannot conform. For instance, at around 4 o'clock every afternoon, after lunch and when you are feeling relaxed, indulge in a bit of non-conformist thinking. Continue this practice and, over time, you may become a total non-conformist, but keep it to yourself to avoid ostracism.
Non-Conformity at Any Time
Non-conformity is recommended at any and all times. It is not just enriching; it is empowering. However, there are situations where the requirement for conformity is deeply rooted in a belief system, such as when one is a follower of a god or human beings who dictate what that god wants. In such cases, non-conformity can be a significant challenge.
Distributing the Load
The practice of non-conformity can be challenging, especially when you bear the responsibility of aligning your actions and thoughts with your beliefs, rather than the norms set by others. It can be a solitary journey, but it is also a path of empowerment and personal growth. Remember, the true journey is one of self-discovery and alignment with your true self, and embracing non-conformity is just one part of that journey.
