Why the Online Hate Towards Autism Spectrum Disorder on 4chan and YouTube
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition characterized by challenges with social interactions and communication, and often includes sensory sensitivities and repetitive behaviors. Despite the increasing awareness of ASD, it still faces a significant amount of hate and criticism, particularly on platforms like 4chan and YouTube. This article examines why ASD is often the target of such hate and provides insights into the underlying issues causing this form of discrimination.
The Reasons Behind Online Hate Towards Autistic People
Anyone who deliberately hates individuals with developmental disorders like ASD is an uneducated and hateful person. Malicious individuals intending to spread hate may indeed be a small minority, but their actions cause significant harm. Moreover, when people blame others for their problems and lack the ability to confront these issues head-on, they tend to target marginalized groups, as these groups often lack strong voices to defend themselves. People with ASD are highly adept at identifying and calling out illogical and ill-informed arguments, making them easy targets for such hate.
Understanding Individuals with ASD
It is crucial to understand that people with ASD are individuals, each with their unique strengths and challenges. Some may have off-putting qualities, while others might be highly social and excel in forming relationships. Just because one person with ASD has undesirable traits does not mean that all of them do. It is important to approach each individual with empathy and an open mind.
If you encounter an individual who hates “autistic people” more than their own mother, it is likely due to a combination of factors, including a lack of understanding, ignorance, and the unique challenges faced by individuals with ASD. People with ASD see through bullshit effortlessly and are not hesitant to call it out, which can be off-putting to others who have built a distorted reality for themselves.
Dealing with Stereotypes and Misunderstandings
The reality is that not all people with ASD exhibit the same characteristics, and they should not be generalized. Just because you have one example of a given behavior doesn't mean you can generalize that behavior as a truism. The stigma and hate directed at ASD often stem from a lack of awareness and understanding. It is important for individuals to educate themselves and challenge their preconceptions.
Personal Experience with ASD
One author has a close friend with severe Asperger's and other aspects of severe autism. The friend’s behavior, often seen as off-putting, was a result of their inability to switch off certain traits, not a lack of understanding or simple ignorance. For example, the friend’s obsession with buying every part of a franchise or purchasing two copies of a game was not due to a lack of financial management skills but a deeper issue of not being able to process the absence of something they value highly.
Many of the negative perceptions about ASD arise from other people's lack of knowledge and misunderstanding. This is not an excuse but an explanation of why such hate exists. If individuals are not exposed to enough people with ASD, they may internalize stereotypes and misconceptions.
Ultimately, education and increased awareness are critical in addressing the hate and discrimination faced by individuals with ASD. By fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society, we can work towards a future where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their diagnosis or perceived characteristics.
